Neck Pain
Neck pain is a common occurrence for a number of individuals. Many people experience one form or another of neck pain every day. Increased hours in front of computer screens, active lifestyles and the aging process can all cause mild to severe neck pain. There are many different triggers for pains in the neck. Treatments for most pain requires little effort, and it is possible to prevent future discomfort.
Neck Pain Triggers
Each person may experience neck pain for a different reason. Some individuals may have health issues causing the pain like tumors, herniated disks and injuries. Less serious causes may include daily emotional stress or physical strain. One of the most common triggers for mild to moderate neck pain is an improper sleeping position. Laying in an unnatural position overnight can cause the neck to become stiff the next day.
Treatment for Neck Pain
Neck pain can affect a person’s life and prevent him or her from taking part in regular activities like working, exercising or even relaxing. There are certain steps to take that will lessen the discomfort and irritation. In most cases, neck pain can be alleviated without the need for medical attention. When the pain persists or worsens, it may be necessary to seek the advice of a healthcare provider.
In most cases, exercise and movement are ideal for treating neck pain. It’s not a good idea to avoid daily activities because the neck may become more stiff. Slowly rotating the head from side to side will encourage relaxation of the neck muscles. It is also beneficial to bend the head towards the chest and hold it for several seconds. A neck massage may also relieve the pain. Applying an ice pack or a heating pad to the neck may provide relief as well. Many people switch from hot to cold until they find which works best.
Preventing Future Neck Pain
While many people may not be able to avoid feeling neck pain, it is possible to reduce the chances of it occurring. An individual who spends several hours a day on a computer should take frequent breaks by standing up, stretching or changing position. Breaks should be taken once an hour. It is also a good idea to sit comfortably at a computer or office desk and avoid slouching and hyper-extending the neck.
Avoiding awkward neck positions is also beneficial. Moving the neck in an unnatural motion can cause damage to the muscles, which results in pain. When sleeping, it is best to lay in a position that is comfortable and natural. Eliminating pains in the neck forever may not be possible, but by taking the necessary precautions, severe and chronic pain can be avoided.
